Superficial form of cellulitis localised to dermis and lymphatic system

Aetiology

  • Causative organism: Strep. pyrogenes

Clinical presentation

  • Most commonly affects the face and is a spreading well demarcated, erythematous plaque
  • Associated symptoms: fever and systemic upset

Investigations

  • Usually clinical diagnosis
  • Cultures from possible portals of entry may be indicated in some circumstances e.g. if patient is very unwell

Management

  • Flucloxacillin - oral, IV if person is unable to take oral or is severely unwell
