Vestibular neuritis: inflammation of the vestibular nerve
Aetiology
- Probably viral
Clinical presentation
- First attack severe, lasting hours with N+V
- Prolonged vertigo (days)
- Labyrinthitis is associated with tinnitus or hearing loss (not seen in vestibular neuritis)
- May be viral symptoms e.g. malaise, headache, N+V
Management
- Supportive management with vestibular sedatives
- Generally self-limiting
- May require further investigation if prolonged or atypical
- May be helped by rehabilitation exercises if prolonged
