Outpouching in the lower part of the small intestine
Aetiology
- Congenital defect - remnant of omphalomesenteric duct
- Higher prevalence in males
Clinical presentation
- Majority are asymptomatic - common incidental finding at laparotomy
- Presentations are the result of complications
- Hamorrhage accounts for 25-50% of all complications
- More common in children < 2 years
- Bright red blood in stools, painless
- Classical presentation in adults includes intestinal obstruction and inflammation of the diverticulum
- May also present due to ulceration or malignant change

- Dictated by the type of complication
Management
- If causing complications - resection
