Meckel's Diverticulum

Outpouching in the lower part of the small intestine

Aetiology

  • Congenital defect - remnant of omphalomesenteric duct
  • Higher prevalence in males

Clinical presentation

  • Majority are asymptomatic - common incidental finding at laparotomy
  • Presentations are the result of complications
  • Hamorrhage accounts for 25-50% of all complications
    • More common in children < 2 years
    • Bright red blood in stools, painless
  • Classical presentation in adults includes intestinal obstruction and inflammation of the diverticulum
    • Can mimic appendicitis
  • May also present due to ulceration or malignant change

Management

  • If causing complications - resection
