Refers to the inhibition of propulsive intestinal motor activity in the absence of a mechanical obstruction
Aetiology
- Recent GI surgery (post-operative ileus) - most common cause
- Other causes include inflammation, medications, infection and diabetic ketoacidosis
Clinical presentation
Symptoms
- Failure to pass flatus/faeces
Signs
Investigations
- Bloods and CT (abdo and pelvis) to rule out more serious pathologies
Management
- ‘Drip and suck’ while awaiting restoration of peristalsis - NG tube feeding and IV fluids
