Aetiology
- Low energy injury - result of indirect torsional injury
- High energy injury - result of direct force
Pathophysiology
- Multiple fracture configurations - spiral, transverse, oblique, comminuted
- Open fractures more common
- Higher risk for compartment syndrome
Clinical presentation
- Pain
- Inability to bear weight
- Deformity
Investigations
- X-ray - AP and lateral
Management
- Conservative - above knee cast
- Patient may need closed reduction in theatre before cast is fitted
- Operative - IM nailing, ORIF
