Epidural Abscess

Rare cause of sepsis in those having regional anaesthesia

Clinical presentation

  • Can present with back pain or fever
  • Potential for neurological deficit as it progresses

Investigations

  • MRI

Management

  • IV antibiotics +/- sugical decompression if no response or if neurological concerns
    • Vancomycin, metronidazole and cefotaxime to cover MRSA, anaerobes and gram negative bacteria
