Inflammation of the brain

Aetiology

  • Most commonly due to viral infection
    • HSV is most common
    • Other causes include: VZV, cytomegalovirus, EBV, enterovirus, adenovirus, influenza virus

Clinical presentation

  • Altered consciousness
  • Altered cognition
  • Unusual behaviour
  • Acute onset of focal neurological symptoms
  • Acute onset of focal seizures
  • Fever

Investigations

  • Lumbar puncture and imaging

Management

  • Antiviral medications - aciclovir treats HSV and VZV
