Aetiology
- Most commonly due to viral infection
- HSV is most common
- Other causes include: VZV, cytomegalovirus, EBV, enterovirus, adenovirus, influenza virus
Clinical presentation
- Altered consciousness
- Altered cognition
- Unusual behaviour
- Acute onset of focal neurological symptoms
- Acute onset of focal seizures
- Fever

- Lumbar puncture and imaging
Management
- Antiviral medications - aciclovir treats HSV and VZV
