Acute Tubular Necrosis

Refers to tubular cell death and acute deterioration in renal function

Aetiology

  • Ischaemic (most common) - almost always due to issues with blood supply to the kidneys e.g. hypotension, shock, malignant hypertension, polyarteritis nodosa and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome
  • Toxins - due to toxins or drugs
  • Post-renal ATN - caused by obstruction of the kidney, rarely cause significant issue
