Infectious disease caused by influenza virus

Aetiology

  • Influenza A and influenza B - pandemics are influenza A

Pathophysiology

  • Transmitted through droplets or direct contact with infected respiratory secretions

Clinical presentation

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Malaise
  • Myalgia
  • Cough - initially dry and painful, becomes productive but painless
  • Nasal congestion
  • Fatigue

  • Clinical diagnosis

Management

  • Supportive
  • Antivirals - prophylaxis and treatment
  • Vaccination for at risk groups
