Stridor

Predominantly inspiratory wheeze due to large airway obstruction

Aetiology

  • In children - most commonly infections (croup, epiglottitis), or a foreign body obstructing airway
  • In adults - most commonly due to tumours
  • Other causes include anaphylaxis and trauma

Investigations

  • Laryngoscopy (be careful if suspected acute epiglottitis)
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Flow volume loop (spirometry)
  • CXR
  • Other imaging e.g. CT, thyroid scan

Management

  • Treat underlying cause
  • O2
  • Emergency - cricothyroidotomy/tracheostomy
